If you’re reading this article, you’re most likely a do-it-yourselfer. And, since you are, the chances that your hands get dirty – I mean REALLY dirty – are pretty darned good. They sure do at the 4X4Review shop, our hands take a regular bath in oil, grease, grime, rust and dirt (sometimes all at once). Sure, you can wear gloves, but they’re often not practical when you’re doing work that requires fine dexterity, which means your grippers will get grimy.
Since our hands do get nasty regularly, and our shop doesn’t have a sink in it, having soap and water readily available isn’t an option for us. So we put a call into the hand sanitizing experts at GOJO to give us a helping hand. They supplied us with a few of their automotive based products to put to the test.
GOJO Scrubbing Wipes
These wipes are for use where heavy-duty cleaning is required. They’re made of extremely durable, dual-textured material, pre-moistened with a powerful cleaning solution that is safe for your hands. The scrubbing side removes the toughest soils, while the smooth side quickly absorbs dirt. Skin conditioners help prevent dryness and irritation, and their extra-large size provides superior cleaning capacity. It’s really a soft towel on one side and a super-tough scrubber on the other.
The Verdict
The GOJO Scrubbing Wipes are an ingenious invention and frankly our favorite product. We’ve used them to wipe down everything from transmissions and engines, workbenches, greasy tools, and of course, our hands. They’re super convenient too and you don’t need a nearby sink.
Get it if: you need to wipe your hands clean quickly from time to time, or scrub-wipe a surface that’s really nasty and you don’t have a sink available.
Forget it if: Your hands are really, really greasy and grimy and need to need to clean under your fingernails too.
Leaves your hands: Clean, but with a very slight slick feeling (not oily or slippery)

GOJO Fast Wipes
The GOJO Fast Wipes are hand-cleaning towels pre-moistened with cleaning agents and are designed for quick cleanup of light greases and oils. They can be used just about anywhere and are perfect for cleaning up light grime on the go, or anywhere wherever water is not available.

The Verdict
GOJO Fast Wipes are perfect for any light-to-moderate cleaning that you need to do whenever water isn’t available. While it’s not a perfect solution for use in a shop where you’re dealing with a lot of grease and grime, they’re perfect for hobbyists that end up working with light greases, oils, dirt, etc. They’re also perfect for use on the road too, especially for servicemen or even for messy kids in the back of the soccer-hauler. We even use them to wipe down plastic surfaces, painted surfaces and even clean grimy tires (although the scrubbing wipes do a slightly better job).
Get it if: You’re a woodworker, gardener, or hobbyist whose hands get dirty, but not greasy/grimy, or if you need to wipe down a workbench, patio furniture, etc. that has gotten dirty.
Forget it if: You’re an automotive mechanic who gets their hands REALLY grimy.

GOJO Original Formula and Orange Smooth Hand Cleaner
GOJO Original Formula has been around since dirt existed. OK, maybe not, but they’ve been around since 1946, which is a really long time and GOJO Original Formula was their first product. It is a cream-based hand cleaner with smooth, soothing emollients designed to remove heavy grease, tar and oil from your skin. It’s designed to be used with or without water. The Orange Smooth hand cleaner has citrus ingredients added to it.

The Verdict
We’ve used GOJO Original and Orange Smooth hand cleaner in our shops since we were knee-high to a grasshopper and it’s a staple for every shop. We’ve used it to clean parts, the front of cars (it’s great for breaking down bugs that are splattered and dried on), clothes that have grease and oil in them, and of course, our hands. While it’s designed as a waterless cleaner, you still need a towel to use afterwards, so it’s not as convenient as the scrubbing wipes, but it does a better job breaking down grease and oils. GOJO Original and Orange Smooth are best used for super greasy and grimy jobs.
Get it if: You’re hands / skin gets SUPER greasy / grimy, or you need to get stubborn oil/grease stains out of clothes.
Forget it if: You’re looking for a convenient, one-stop cleaning solution as you still need a towel to remove the cleaning gel.
Leaves your hands: Clean, but more oily and slightly slippery with a clean scent (The Orange Smooth cleaner is the same but with a moderately strong orange smell)

GOJO Cherry Gel Pumice Hand Cleaner
Tired of an orange, citrusy smell? Enter GOJO’s New Cherry Gel Pumice hand cleaner with pumice scrubbers. It’s designed to quickly clean heavy dirt, grease and oil and contains skin conditioners (and is pH balanced) to prevent your hands from getting dry.

The Verdict
GOJO Cherry Gel Pumice hand cleaner isn’t what we would describe as an automotive hand cleaning product per se, but it does do a good job.
Get it if: You don’t like the smell of oranges, you like the smell of Luden’s cherry lozenges and you need a pumice hand scrubber to get your moderately greasy / grimy hands clean.
Forget it if: You’re hands/skin are exceedingly greasy and grimy or if you need to use it for something else (e.g. cleaning clothes, the front bumper on your car, etc.)
Leaves your hands: Clean and slightly slick and smelling like cherry.

GOJO Hand Medic Professional Skin Conditioner
After all of this product testing our hands were clean, sanitized and smooth. However, we do find ourselves working with paint thinner, brake parts cleaner, and other chemicals which really dry our hands out. We ordered up a few samples of GOJO’s Hand Medic skin lotion.

The GOJO Hand Medic skin lotion is a great product that doesn’t leave your hands with a girly smell of some flower field fragrance. In fact, there’s little smell to it at all, which is what we prefer. Hand Medic is thinner than most hand lotions, but does an excellent job putting moisture back into your hands (better than most we’ve tried). Most importantly, it doesn’t leave your hands slippery or slick at all. After a moment of rubbing it into your hands, you’re ready to get back to work, or head out for a night on the town (just be sure to get that grease off of your brow first!).
