Bombproof, But Not Fireproof!
Kent’s 1965 CJ-5 Tuxedo Park Mark IV (limited edition, we believe that there were about 2000 made in 1964 and 1965) was a thing of beauty and home-grown engineering. The Jeep sported ‘77 Dana 30 and AMC 20 axles (OX locker up front Detroit locker in rear) with Warn HD axle shafts in the front and Moser one-piece axle conversions in rear. Tom Wood built long-spline CV-type drive shafts to send power from the T150 gear box/Dana 20 T-Case combo to the axles. 4.88 gears turned the 38.5” TSL Super Swamper SX’s which were mounted on American Racing 15X10” rims. To stop the rig, Kent installed Stainless Steel Disc Brakes.
The rig road up high, cleared the big meats and flexed well with a custom shackle reversal, 4-inch Skyjacker (Wrangler) springs and a custom spring-over lift. 4 ProComp 3000 shocks kept the rig from po-go’ing down the road.
To give the over-size CJ5 some get-up-and-go, Kent installed a Chevy 350, 4-bolt main mill, which was filled with a hot Crane Cam/lifter combo, a Holley intake and Holley Truck Avenger Carburetor. To keep everything cool, Kent installed an all aluminum Griffin radiator with twin electric fans, a power steering cooler and an oil cooler.
A few other mods included a Warn 8000 lb winch, custom frame work, custom bumpers and more.
Rather unfortunately, Kent’s rig caught fire while trying to climb a steep ledge. Kent believes that the carb overloaded with fuel from sitting at such a steep angle and gasoline ran down the back of the engine and all over the exhaust. When Kent went to restart his rig there was a backfire which ignited the fuel. After exhausting more than 2 fire extinguishers, the rig go too hot to continue extinguishing efforts.
When talking to Kent during the ordeal, all he could muster was “No carburetor can replace fuel injection”.
Fortunately, Kent’s wife was quite understanding of the whole ordeal and Kent is now in the process of building a 1985 CJ5. We’re pretty sure that he’ll be installing fuel injection this time!

Couple of things that come to mind;
1) Double, err... triple check ALL of your fuel lines and fuel line connections.
2) If you're using rubber fuel hose, check them frequently! Look for cracks, abrasions and chaffing. Fix and replace as needed. (I change my rubber fuel lines every other year regardless. It's cheap insurance)
3) Always carry at least TWO fire extinguishers on board. They can be bought for about $20 each at Home Depot or a similar place.
4) Check your wiring... this is an arduous task to say the least, but electrical fires are more common than fuel fires.
5) Check hot-spots, such as headers and catalytic converters. They put out a lot of heat and should be clear of anything flammable, and properly shielded.
6) Know how to use a fire extinguisher... there are so many people that just don't know how to use them.
I'm sure there's more, but that's all that is coming to mind right now.
