i have a 1979 cj5 with a 258 inline six.  it doesn't have spark at the spark plugs but has power to the distributor cap.  i replaced the distributor cap, plugs, wires. rotor, the distributor pick up magnet also.  i have cleaned the grounds to the motor and frame.  i have checked the wiring for the coil and hand the ignition module check and its fine.  i pulled the distributor of fand the rotor does spin so i believe the distributor is fine.   i am out of ideas so any help for trials is welcomed..... thanks

My gut feeling is that the coil is not sending power to the distributor, and that the problem may exist with the wiring going to the coil. Couple questions:

1) Have you checked for spark to ALL spark plugs?
2) Have you checked to see if you have a bad coil perhaps?
3) Are you sure you're getting 12V dc TO the coil when the key is in the start position?

My GUT thinks but is not sure but is pretty sure it is the distributor. Seen this problem a couple of times on the inline 6n espically on the older ones. I wonder its prob not the original distrib so its prob an autozone. The issue is that it is reman and the prisoners that are rebuilding dont know to fix them. I see it alot when you try to tighten the distrib down it pulls the rotor down and the rotor doesnt make contact. take the distrib out and see if the shaft has upward and downward play i bet it does.
